In reaction to the outbreak of COVID-19, Movemeon developed an initiative titled ‘Consultants Against COVID-19‘. This initiative comprises of 400+ highly skilled consultants and ex-consultants willing and ready to provide their services for free to support any charities, public sector and other not for profit organisations in need during the crisis. Headed up by Jack Fitch and Clare Tsangari (who are also volunteering their support for free) they are matchmaking the best skills to key roles and creating awareness through a dedicated LinkedIn channel.
40+ consultants have currently been placed with a variety of public health organisations, charities and government at the national level. This is Emmanuel’s journey to supporting London Strategic Coordination Group. The SCG’s role is to co-ordinate the response to an emergency across a region including consequence management and recovery.
Where did you start your career/where are you going?
I started my career at Simia Wall, a firm of accountants based in London. I worked there for close to four years and moved to industry. I enjoy the consulting process and working to help individuals and companies solve some of the challenges that revolve around finance, accounting and other aspects of business such as strategy. In fulfilling this desire, I have worked on various projects with some leading consulting companies providing solutions for clients in both the private and public sector. I am currently contributing to improving the state of financial inclusion, especially within the informal sector within emerging markets by the use of technology-based products.
What first attracted you to volunteer your time and join Consultants against COVID-19?
I was looking for ways to put my spare time into productive use when the lockdown was announced in March 2020, so I joined Consultants against COVID-19. It was quite simple for someone like me to join because I was already part of Movemeon’s talent pool. I got contacted by Jack Fitch regarding a Financial Auditor role since he thought my experience and background was a good match for the role.
What are the key aspects of your new role and how do they help support your new company?
My role requires me to perform a spending review for the mortality management group for COVID-19 and provide a report on key findings and recommendations (if any). I am liaising with key stakeholders to identify all monies spent and how they were administered. It is an interesting one and it’s made me pick up new things within local government.
How has this worldwide pandemic affected you personally/your work life?
The pandemic has made me reflect more on life and things that really matter like family, healthy relationships, mental health and many more. Though it has done a lot more harm to the global economy, I think it has come with some positives so I’m looking at the glass half full.
What are you doing more of because of coronavirus?
I am reading more; I have read more books and bought more books this year than any other since I became an avid reader. So again, this is one of the positives I’ve taken out of the pandemic which led to the lockdown.
Finally, what are you most looking forward to doing once social distancing rules have been relaxed?
I am looking forward to the face to face meetings and personal interactions. Virtual calls and meetings have been helpful but it can never be the same as meeting people in person. You can attend an event online (which is good) but I feel it takes away that aspect of networking with people for the very first time.
