In reaction to the outbreak of COVID-19, Movemeon developed an initiative titled ‘Consultants Against COVID-19‘. This initiative comprises of 400+ highly skilled consultants and ex-consultants willing and ready to provide their services for free to support any charities, public sector and other not for profit organisations in need during the crisis. Headed up by Jack Fitch and Clare Tsangari (who are also volunteering their support for free) they are matchmaking the best skills to key roles and creating awareness through a dedicated LinkedIn channel.
40+ consultants have currently been placed with a variety of public health organisations, charities and government at the national level. This is Felipe’s journey to supporting PEAS, a UK-based charity that builds, develops and runs low fee secondary schools in Uganda and Zambia.
Where did you start your career/where are you going?
I started my career working a strategy role in the energy sector, in Colombia. Since then, my career has taken a few turns both in terms of function and geography, doing internal and external consulting in Italy, Scotland and England.
Going forward, and after a successful entrepreneurial experience in the UK in the past couple of years, I’m really excited to get plugged into the start-up ecosystem in Spain, where I’ll be moving during the month of June.
What first attracted you to volunteer your time and join Consultants against COVID-19?
Once the global lockdowns were put in place in the earlier months of the year, I found myself having to postpone a number of personal plans, which thankfully gave me more extra time than I could have ever hoped for. This, coupled with the daily witnessing of how COVID was also derailing the plans of many companies across every single sector in the economy, prompted me to make a better use of my time, in a way that would have a positive impact on others. That’s when, after some research for pro-bono opportunities, I found “Consultants Against COVID” and did not hesitate to send in my application. And I’m very glad I did.
What are the key aspects of your new role and how do they help support your new company?
I joined the team at PEAS (Providing Equality in African Schools) to support them on a number of ‘mini-projects’ related to their response plan to COVID. PEAS are the leading private network of secondary schools in Africa, serving more than 14,000 students across Uganda and Zambia, and the closure and reopening of schools brings about a number of financial & non-financial considerations, as well as a cascade effect on strategic decisions with impact well past 2020. Working with the PEAS team has been a privilege. The humanity of the team and the care for the children is contagious.
How has this worldwide pandemic affected you personally/your work life?
The pandemic started at a tricky moment for me: I had just quit my job in London, had closed up my London flat and had (have) most of my belongings in storage, all while not yet having found a flat in Madrid for my later move in March. That said, being forced to slow down was a gift. It gave me the opportunity to strengthen my personal relations, to do some consulting engagements remotely, and to read some of the books I had kept in my Amazon cart for months. And evidently, it also gave me the invaluable opportunity to work with PEAS.
What are you doing more of because of coronavirus?
I’ve spent most of my time reading, writing, doing online courses, and cooking. Now that I’m recharged and confinement is softening, I’m initiating conversations with some Madrid & Barcelona-based startups
Finally, what are you most looking forward to doing once social distancing rules have been relaxed?
Definitely I’m looking forward to doing some sports AND dinner parties at friends’.
