In reaction to the outbreak of COVID-19, Movemeon developed an initiative titled ‘Consultants Against COVID-19‘. This initiative comprises of 400+ highly skilled consultants and ex-consultants willing and ready to provide their services for free to support any charities, public sector and other not for profit organisations in need during the crisis. Headed up by Jack Fitch and Clare Tsangari (who are also volunteering their support for free) they are matchmaking the best skills to key roles and creating awareness through a dedicated LinkedIn channel.
40+ consultants have currently been placed with a variety of public health organisations, charities and government at the national level. This is Richard’s journey to supporting Peppy Health with their trial support programme for new and expectant parents to help those most in need.
Where did you start your career/where are you going?
I started consulting for investment banks one month before Lehman Brothers went under in 2007. It was an interesting time! With all the new banking regulations coming out of the US and EU, I specialised in regulatory change (largely Dodd-Frank and EMIR, plus also MiFID I). I worked as a management consultant, business analyst and project manager.
In recent years, I have expanded into different regulations as a project and programme manager. I’ve successfully delivered large programmes on ring-fencing (separating out the largest UK banks’ retail businesses from their investment bank/large corporate activity) and on Brexit.
I love delivering the biggest, most complex challenges that businesses face. While the need for change is often driven by new regulation, the most successful projects don’t just aim for compliance – instead, they aim to deliver a sustainable, well-considered transformation that adds real value to the organisation.
What first attracted you to volunteer your time and join Consultants against COVID-19?
After taking six months off to travel along the Silk Road (which was wonderful), I found the job market had been completely derailed by COVID-19. With my newly-found spare time, I’d done all the DIY I could do in the house but I wanted to start using my professional skills and experience again.
I signed up for Consultants against COVID-19 as it was a great fit for my professional and personal skills, and I could deliver a positive social impact.
What are the key aspects of your new role and how do they help support your new company?
I’ve helped Peppy Health – a healthcare start-up – deliver an NHS-funded trial to 1,000 new and expectant parents to help them deal with the impacts of COVID-19.
Peppy have been great at matching skillsets to tasks. I’ve been able to build a lightweight but robust process for matching parents to their specialist perinatal practitioners, including automation and built-in controls. I’ve also coordinated a series of c. 30 live Zoom chats on all manner of parenting topics with Peppy’s partner organisations, and fully immersed myself in data analytics. It’s been busy!
How has this worldwide pandemic affected you personally/your work life?
As a self-confessed extrovert and city-lover, I’ve had to adjust to chilling out at home when I really want to go exploring and see people.
However, it’s also been a great time to spend time reading, DIYing, and cooking new Persian dishes inspired by our holiday.
What are you doing more of because of coronavirus?
I have been much more active at keeping in touch with ex-colleagues now that I can’t bump into people around the city or Canary Wharf. I’ve re-discovered the joy of short catch-up messages to say hi with no sales agenda – I’ve worked with so many great people and it’s nice to see how they’re doing.
I’ve also invested time reading about industry developments in the banking space and exploring interesting articles about large-scale agile transformations.
Finally, what are you most looking forward to doing once social distancing rules have been relaxed?
Sunny beer garden – chat with friends – a cold glass of dry white wine. Perfect.
