IN YOUR OWN WORDS PLEASE DESCRIBE WHAT MTECH CAPITAL DOES
MTech Capital is a venture capital fund investing in early-stage technology businesses with applications for the insurance industry. We define insurance to include adjacent areas of financial services like asset management, pensions, etc.
We invest in companies that have the potential to transform one or more elements of the insurance value chain. This includes companies that have reinvented an existing insurance product with a digital angle and those providing software or technology to incumbent insurers. We invest across North America and Europe and have offices in Santa Monica and London.
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT MTECH CAPITAL?
I joined the fund in January as an associate. The associate role is very hands-on and I spent my time screening potential investments, conducting due diligence, supporting the partners in fundraising and representing MTech Capital at events and conferences.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE SO FAR?
It’s a very interesting and exciting place to work. Venture capital brings a lot of variety and insurtech and fintech are some of the liveliest industries to be investing in at the moment. There are great opportunities for growth at MTech and we have a collaborative and supportive team.
WHY DID YOU JOIN MTECH CAPITAL?
I was interested in moving away from consulting into an investment role. Most of my time at my previous consulting firm was spent working with private equity funds and I wanted to move to from being an adviser to working on investments as a principal. I focused on the financial services sector in my previous role and I had a lot of experience working with software and data companies in this space so MTech Capital was a very good fit with my interests and experience.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THE COMPANY?
I believe our focus on the insurance and financial services industry and our network of limited partners means we have a very distinctive and compelling offering to entrepreneurs. Also, because we are a new fund there has been a lot of opportunities to shape how we operate as a firm and I have the freedom to research investment opportunities in the areas that I find most interesting.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CULTURE AND VALUES?
The company has an open culture which is collaborative and non-hierarchical. We operate as a single team working across two offices and we speak with our colleagues in Santa Monica on a daily basis and work very closely to build a consensus view on investments that runs through the firm, rather than having individuals working in siloes. We are focused on being an added value investor and want to offer more than just capital to the businesses we invest in.
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN AND WHERE DO YOU SEE MTECH CAPITAL GOING?
The partners bring decades of venture capital and industry experience to a sector of the economy that is incredibly vast and – until recently – largely untouched by technological change. Our goal is to be the venture capital fund of choice for entrepreneurs building technology businesses in the insurance space.
WHAT KIND OF PERSON WOULD SUIT WORKING AT MTECH CAPITAL, AND WHAT KIND OF PERSON MIGHT THE ENVIRONMENT NOT SUIT?
MTech would suit people who are genuinely interested in start-ups and technology and the impact they can have on the insurance industry. We spend a lot of time meeting with entrepreneurs so you have to be personable, while having the analytical skills to sift through the large number of opportunities that we see and prioritise the most exciting ones.
We have a variety of consulting backgrounds at MTech from McKinsey and LEK to more boutique firms. We would be looking for someone with a background in strategy consulting and good experience working with technology and financial services businesses.
