From consulting to start-up – Learn from others – Movemeon Newsletter August 2021

Are you thinking of leaving consulting to join a start-up? Read this month’s newsletter below to learn from our network’s experiences, and gather all their tips and insights.

LEARN FROM OTHERS

In both consulting and start-ups, there’s a healthy focus on learning from your mistakes. At McKinsey, we saw first hand how getting to the real issue/ problem was the most important part of solving it. And in the world of start-ups, a lot goes wrong; Movemeon was certainly no exception. However, making the mistake rarely matters – it’s how you learn from it that counts.

Over the years, we’ve been really lucky to have a great network of founders and advisors around us, who are happy to share the lessons they’ve learnt – again, often through mistakes they’ve made.

We wanted to expand this network of advice, and pass on the lessons to others. So we’re really excited to launch our content newsletter – a monthly round-up of great advice from members of our community, or common themes we’ve heard. We hope you find it useful – and you can complete this survey if there is anything you’d like to share or hear about.

CONSULTING: THE LEADING INCUBATOR FOR START-UP TALENT

Jumia ($824m), Monzo (£325m), Wise ($773m), Funding Circle ($746m), Zopa (£360m), Qonto ($151m), Gocardless (£95m), Jobteaser ($75m), Innovafeed (€55m). Just some of the most well-known and celebrated start-ups. Four have reached unicorn status; the others are hoping to. And they were all founded or co-founded by ex-consultants.

Consulting attracts high achievers as it is one of the most prestigious careers post-university. This is partly because the brands are so well-known across industries, but also because it is recognised as a career that opens doors.

So we wrote a two-part series on the reasons why consultants excel when it comes to work at and launch start-ups, with insights from different recognised start-up leaders.
