Interview with Tom, Managing Director for On Purpose. We discuss Movemeon’s pandemic response, how On Purpose utilised free support during the crisis and what effect the pandemic has had on this Managing Director.
In reaction to the outbreak of COVID-19, Movemeon deployed a pandemic response initiative titled, Consultants Against COVID-19 (CAC). This initiative comprises of 400+ consultants and commercial professionals providing their services for free to support any charities, public sector and other not for profit organisations in need.
45+ professionals have currently been placed with a variety of public health organisations, charities and government at the national level. If you are in need of support email email@example.com
“Thank you Movemeon for helping On Purpose emerge from lockdown ready to continue to pursue our mission”
In your own words, please describe what On Purpose does, and how they have grown.
On Purpose helps people and organisations find their purpose, and then helps them make it a reality. The core of our community is the On Purpose Associate Programme which helps young professionals in London, Paris and Berlin transition into careers with social purpose. Over the past decade, we have built a community of over 2000 people committed to building an economy that works for everyone, within the limits of our planet.
What is your current role at On Purpose and what were you doing before?
I am On Purpose’s Managing Director. I started my career as a management consultant at Deloitte where I learnt a lot and met some great people. After a few years, I decided I wanted my next career step to take me towards work that was more in line with my values. I found the On Purpose Associate Programme, applied and was accepted and never looked back. After completing the Associate Programme in 2011, I joined the Ambition Institute, a leadership development charity working with school leaders in areas of high economic deprivation, where I worked as their COO.
I also spent time as a Venture Partner for Ark Ventures. I then rejoined On Purpose last year as Managing Director.
What motivated you to join the On Purpose, and what do you enjoy most about working there?
On Purpose’s mission is closely aligned with my personal values, and it’s also a brilliant team here. I have always enjoyed working for organisations that are built around helping people and creating positive change, and On Purpose definitely fits that bill too.
Movemeon’s pandemic response initiative, Consultants against COVID (CAC) supported you recently, how did our pro bono consultants help you?
Consultants Against COVID consultant, Gordon Agius joined us in May and helped us put in place live dashboards which mean we can see more clearly and immediately see the progress we are making recruiting people and organisations to join our programmes. It’s made a big difference to our teams so thanks again to him for all the work he did with us.
“Its been great to support On Purpose”
– Gordon Aguis
How has this worldwide pandemic affected you personally/your work life?
We closed our office in March and I have only been back three times since. As much of my work is video calls with our teams in Paris and Berlin, and we already worked remotely for at least one day a week, in some ways the shift to fully home working wasn’t that big a change. On the other hand, it’s been hard not seeing the team in person and not meeting new team members face to face. And personally, my wife and I shared lockdown with Joe, our 18-month-old son, which was… interesting.
I am spending more time with Joe, which is great. I am also spending more time outdoors in nature, which again I’ve also really enjoyed. And I’m now starting to make a list of box sets ready for the winter…
What are you most looking forward to doing once social distancing rules have been relaxed?
Seeing more of family and friends! Work-wise, it will be good to be able to more easily make the choice to meet face to face – but I know we are all very happy to see the back of the world of presenteeism and face time.
