About Commercial Strategy

Commercial Strategy is responsible for developing and implementing the strategy across buying and merchandising. We are looking for an engaging and analytical Assistant Strategy Manager to help drive the success of commercial as we expand our close-knit team of 8.

The team is responsible for:

  • Working with key stakeholders to develop and communicate the commercial strategy, ensuring it remains relevant and rooted in the wider ambitions of the Sainsbury’s Argos vision, corporate strategy & group strategy
  • Driving the power of the group by pulling together a holistic commercial view both internally and externally across the markets and categories within which we play
  • Empowering the trading teams to deliver a compelling proposition within each of their specialist markets
  • Representing Commercial within cross-functional workstreams and working to embed commercial priorities across the business
  • Providing answers and recommendations to ad hoc commercially relevant queries

Assistant Manager – Commercial Strategy

You will both lead and support on a range of projects that contribute to the success of the team responsibilities. As a result, your work can make a real impact to our customers and has the potential to focus on a variety of areas, such as ranging principles, shopper missions and channel mix.

To do this you will:

Get to the answers, and the right questions: Shape the pertinent questions that will drive most value, create a hypothesis and translate this into analysis requirements to ultimately reach distilled, actionable recommendations for the business.

Articulate conclusions clearly: Identify the most appropriate means to communicate findings and recommendations, create the relevant content and present to the right people.

Manage stakeholders: Work with business teams across Trading, Marketing, Digital & Supply to build relationships, collaborating particularly with Senior Managers, Buying Managers & Merchandising Managers. This could be through setting up & leading working groups, running workshops or working directly with individuals.

Programme management: Lead the response to ad hoc management queries, align workstreams ensuring they ladder up to our total team purpose, and ensure that dependencies required from other teams are aligned to ensure the success of the broader project.

What we’re looking for:

We are looking for an ex-consultant with experience in retail and/or e-commerce. You will need to be a strategic thinker, with great commercial understanding. There’s always a lot going on at Sainsbury’s Argos, so we would also like you to be prepared to manage complex processes involving large amounts of information and build strong relationships with multiple stakeholders across the commercial function.

Specific experience will include:

  • Educated to University degree level or equivalent or demonstrable strategy experience within previous roles
  • Highly analytical with experience translating data into insight
  • Capability to frame issues, make conclusions and articulate recommendations to enable quick and sound decision-making.
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding and passion for retail
