The Role
Reporting to the Director of Strategy & Operations (new) and/or Senior Manager of Strategy & Operations (existing), the Strategy & Operations Associate is a newly created role and will be a key member of the Discovery Education International team. The role is an internal strategic planning, business development role and operational role, responsible for developing and executing growth strategies in international territories outside the US and UK. Fundamental to this role is supporting the business case for new business initiatives, delivering on these opportunities and tracking performance in order to ensure healthy revenue and profits in International markets.
This role requires a highly varied skill set, the ability to work with a high level of ambiguity, the commitment to jump in and do what is necessary to deliver and a “can do” attitude.
The role also requires coordination between several internal team members across different departments within Discovery Education UK and US offices, including finance, legal, product management, content production, web development, professional development, marketing and project management. The role will also lead to opportunities to manage relationships with external clients, vendors, and partners.
Specific responsibilities
The role will have three overall main purposes:
Business growth through supporting new strategic initiatives and new business development
Sound delivery through execution that is high-quality, on-time and in-budget
Business performance monitoring through weekly performance dashboards, month-end financial reporting, budgeting/forecasting, etc.

Support the strategic planning process through research and analysis and business plan modelling
Create financial models that enable easy assessment / “what if” analysis
Support the development and execution of the strategy, which is focused on driving revenue and profitability through market and channel expansion, new product launches and new content production/localisation through a soon-to-be-established low-cost production hub in a low-cost high-tech market
Business development support
Support the business development team by developing proposals which include looking at the best delivery method, providing detailed costings and generating impactful PowerPoint and Word documents
Sound delivery
Manage the execution of project delivery for current and new partners, including being responsible for creating project plans and ensuring all activities, tasks and deliverables related to international partnerships are delivered on time and within budget
Business performance monitoring
Use research, data, and metrics to continuously demonstrate the success of the programme
Produce regular progress reports driven by both qualitative and quantitative analysis
Maintain performance dashboard and create new dashboards with customer-centric metrics
Help create annual budgets and update on a monthly basis
General
- Maintain an understanding of industry trends and current events by reading professional publications, researching all available prospect/product resources and participating in professional organisations
- Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal, organisational and presentation skills
- Understand new technologies and industry trends and be able to speak to how they impact Discovery Education
- Establish strong relationships with International clients and DE colleagues across the business
- Develop PowerPoint presentations that are engaging and effective in telling a story
Basic qualifications and skills
- University degree required
- A total of 2-4 years’ experience as a strategy and/or management consultant
- Experience working in media, EdTech and/or digital industries
- Task-oriented and strict attention to detail
- Ability to work with virtual teams across functions, geographies and business units
- Ability to manage local support, sub-contractors, and vendors assigned to projects
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and balance competing priorities
- Entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to jump in and do whatever is necessary to deliver
- Willingness to travel as necessary; initially expected to be low (5-10% max) but could increase over time
- Excellent written/verbal communication skills
- Proficient in MS Office (XLS, DOC and PPT)
- Must have the legal right to work in the United Kingdom
